In our country, majority of our youth living in a village can not get access to basic education and lack of education leave them with no other option other than joining cultivation. Some of them can not even make their ends meet which leads to poverty, among these youth there may be few who may have talent but could not make it to that level due to lack of support and required infrastructure. Similarly we have youth and students studying in urban area and they are not good enough to become successful in their academic career but may have hidden talents if they are given proper guidance, can do better in life. Bearing this in mind, Ministry of Skills development & entrepreneurship launched Industrial Training Institute in 1950 with the aim of providing training to the youth on 130 different fields, prerequisite for this training was 8th to 12th pass students. At present, National Skill India Mission initiative of Govt of India ,14,779 ITIs are operational and 72.49 lakh candidates have been enrolled in the last five years. Govt. of India launched many small skills development schemes under National Skill India mission in the year 2015 with an aim to equip the youth of our country with industry relevant competencies and knowledge to enhance their employability and to make them independent. Courses and skills training under National Skill India mission are made available in line with the skills required by the industries.

The primary objective of National Skills India Mission is empowering people to strive and deliver. After attending skills training, our youth can get better paying job with better position in different sectors which will improve their quality of life. They can even start their own set-up and become entrepreneur and can give employment to other needy people.

Schemes Under the Skill India Mission

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY):

The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana is the most important among all the Skill India initiative. In this initiatives, youth are taught industry-relevant skills and training and make them job ready which ensures jobs and better living. After successfully completing the course, they are given certificates. In this initiative, apart from imparting domain specific training, they are also given session on soft skills so that they understand code of conduct ,basic communication , team work, work ethics needed in the world of work.

NAPS (National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme): Under this scheme training on apprenticeship is imparted by providing financial assistance to industrial establishments for undertaking apprenticeship programs under The Apprenticeship Act 1961.

JSS (Jan Shikshan Sansthan Scheme): The primary aim this scheme to develop vocational skills to those people who are school drop out ,could not finish formal education and wish to get trained to support their families financially through self-employment. The priority group of people for this scheme are village women, SCs, STs, minorities, and other economically backward sections of the society.

India International Skill Centre (IISC): Govt of India will be opening 50 India International Skill Center across the country through NSDC. The primary objective of this scheme is to develop skills of our youth to a higher level which is at par with international standard so that they get to work in foreign countries after successful completion of the course. Our country is collaborating with countries like Germany, Belarus, Australia, France, Japan, United Kingdom and Qatar to facilitate apprentice training.

Courses offered under National Skills India Mission:

Management and Finance Programmes: Financial Statement Analysis, Modern Office Practice, Marketing for Managers, etc.

Entrepreneurship Development Programmes ( EDP): EDP develop entrepreneurial competencies among the people. Specially Women EDP, Women Empowerment, etc. EDP aims to develop needed skills and knowledge so that one can start his or her own enterprise and run it successfully.

Skill Development Programmes: The objective of this program is to develop skills in Dairy based ESDP, Beautician, Carpentry, Die Fitter, Electroplating, metal finishing , Jig boring and related fields. etc.

Other skills: Promotion of Micro-Enterprises, Cluster Development, Lending strategies for MSMEs, etc.Soft Skills at Work

Eligibility for enrolling in Skills India courses under PMKVY scheme

10th pass students and 12th class school dropouts can enroll in PMKVY to develop their skill set. They will be given different market-relevant skills to make them emplyable.

How to apply for the various skills programmes under the Skill India Mission?

Aspiring candidates should first register with their personal details, contact and communication details

Then they need to upload identification documents and education details

Students can choose from the list of courses as per their eligibility across various sectors and job roles

A confirmation mail / message will be sent to the candidate on their registered mobile number and email upon successful registration.

Government has achieved its skilled force targets with 1.07 crore youth trained by January 2021 under the Skill India Mission. 36.04 lakh candidates were trained under short term training (STT) component. Out of this, 18.95 lakh candidates have been placed (2.77 lakh – self-employed, 15.83 lakh – wage employed and 0.35 apprenticeship).
